Take the “A” Train

Artist

Stephanie McKay

Grades

3-6 (libraries only)

Format

Workshop

Stephanie McKay brings her years of professional performing experience and deep love for education to this unique library program focused on the history of the Harlem Renaissance Movement. Through a mixture of song, storytelling, poetry, historical photographs, and theater role play, Stephanie introduces students to a collective of creative innovators—Duke Ellington, Adelaide Hall, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ella Fitzgerald, James Van der Zee, and more—who broke color barriers by using their art forms to drive a cultural movement. Students will leave with a new understanding of how artists use their art and voice to reimagine their role in society and amplify their civil rights through art.
